Help Prevent Scars, Infections, Bedsores and Skin Ulcers
BioHeal
is especially useful in maintaining healthy skin in persons "At-Risk"
for skin damage.
Persons with:
Diabetes
Eczema
and dry, cracking skin
Psoriasis
Immune-compromised
status (HIV, immuno-suppressant therapy)
The
bedridden and persons in wheelchairs
Radiation-burned
skin from cancer therapy
Skin
allergies such as nickel or poison ivy
The use of BioHeal often rapidly improves skin health in persons at risk for skin ulcers and bedsores and stops the further development of such sores. Prevention is much better than healing open skin wounds.
BioHeal is also useful to help repair skin after hair removal methods (waxing, shaving, electrolysis) and rapidly reduces soreness in the skin. It also works well to help heal skin damage caused by nail polish removers which often produce a dry and cracking skin.
The Unity of Many Diverse Damaging Skin Conditions
Healthy skin has a strong
resistance to irritants and microorganisms but damaged skin is prone to
infections, irritating, and allergic substances. While
serious skin damage can arise from diverse causes such as immune suppression,
diabetes, eczema and so forth, most of these conditions work by either
(1) inhibiting the normal skin repair process, (2) directly damaging the
skin itself such as abrasions, or by (3) the chronic generation of free
radicals in the damaged area. The acceleration of the skin repair
mechanisms and the detoxification of oxygen radicals by activation of the
natural superoxide dismutase protective system can very often restore normal
skin health or at least greatly diminish the damage to the skin.

Copper-Peptide Based Skin Regeneration
BioHeal and our other skin repair creams contain our patented SRCP that enhances skin repair while reducing skin inflammation. SRCPs mimic the natural process that stimulates skin repair and also serve to detoxify free radicals and activate the skin's primary anti-oxidant defense - superoxide dismutase.
BioHeal functions very well to heal damaged skin at the early stages of skin breakdown.
Photographs at left: Example of healing "at-risk" skin. In the top photo, the patient has two open skin ulcers visible in left top and bottom of the photo. On the right of the photo, there are reddish fissures developing into skin ulcers. In the bottom photo, the application of BioHeal to the periphery of the skin ulcers has healed the fissured skin and prevented further ulcer development. It should be emphasize that BioHeal is only to be used for "at-risk" skin in the stage of pre-ulcer dermatitis to help prevent further skin breakdown. It is not for the treatment of open skin ulcers.
BioHeal is our skin cream specifically designed for repair "At-Risk" skin. However, our customers also use our Protect & Restore Skin Renewal Creams for these purposes. The P&R creams have less Copper-Peptide and no camphor or menthol.
While BioHeal has the
strongest effects on skin repair and has the most pain reduction, the P&R
creams have more aesthetic appeal. P&R #3 often works well for skin
repair. BioHeal has slightly more Copper-Peptide and sticks better to damaged
skin. BioHeal also contains the non-drug pain reducers camphor and menthol.

Special Problems of "At-Risk" Skin Conditions
Eczema is a term for "inflammation of the skin" and can have many causes. In general, the skin has an overly high pH, meaning it is not acid enough. This loosens the skin's outer protective proteins and lets irritants through the skin barrier. BioHeal should be applied as a light coating to such skin. Link to BioHeal for Eczema, Dry Skin & Sjorgren's Syndrome Page.
A variant of eczema is dry, cracking skin which is especially severe (or Sjorgren's Syndrome) is due to excessive water loss as a result of a breakdown in the protective outer barrier of the skin. Also, the skin's production of the water-holding proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) may be deficient. BioHeal helps repair both the skin barrier and increase the production of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans. Moisturizers can be of temporary help, but do not address the fundamental problems and can worsen skin with time by weakening the skin's outer protective proteins. Link to BioHeal for Eczema, Dry Skin & Sjorgren's Syndrome.
Contact Dermatitis is is caused by two factors: (1) The integrity of the skin barrier that resists irritants and (2) the degree of exposure to irritants. BioHeal acts to counter Contact Dermatitis by rebuilding the protective skin barrier. In addition, its anti-inflammatory properties reduce irritation.
Contact Dermatitis is increased after hair removal methods such as shaving or waxing, when the skin is very sensitive and prone to invasion by bacteria and viruses. Most warts start this way and are found primarily on the legs of women and the beard area of the face in men. The more rapidly such skin is healed, the more able it is to resist the entry of viruses and bacteria. Link to BioHeal for Contact Dermatitis.
Contact Dermatitis is also increased from nail polish removers such as acetone or acetonitrile that extract skin fats and damage the skin on the finger and the cuticle of the nail. This can produce hangnails, skin flaking, increased allergies, and sometimes infections. One of our clinical studies described below specifically targeted this type of skin injury. (Zhai, Leow, and Maibach, "Human barrier recovery after acute acetone perturbation: An Irritant Dermatitis Model", Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, Volume 23, pages 11-13, 1998) Link to BioHeal for Contact Dermatitis.
Diabetes patients, who often have slow and inadequate skin repair, are some of the happiest BioHeal users. They tell us that the application of BioHeal to damaged skin leads to a rapid improvement in skin health and helps prevent the development of cracks and fissures in the skin which may turn into skin ulcers. Rapid healing of broken and cracked skin, before an infection sets in, is very important. In diabetic patients, skin infections are a leading cause of amputations and death. Link to BioHeal for Diabetic Skin Conditions.
Burns from thermal injuries and radiation treatments heal very slowly. After the burn, a "zone-of-stasis" often develops around the burned tissue and often becomes an oozing sore. The body does not receive the proper signals for skin repair and repair is very slow. After burns, use BioHeal after the burn has scabbed over, but not immediately after the burn. Every day, use a light coating of BioHeal in the morning and in the evening as needed. If a radiation burn has a center of ulcerated tissue, only use the BioHeal around the outer rim of skin surrounding the skin ulcers. Physicians who have used BioHeal say it often helps to produce healing of very difficult radiation caused skin ulcers. Link to BioHeal for Burns.
Skin allergies often occur from agents such as nickel, poison ivy, and poison oak. BioHeal often works very well in these situations and is much safer than cortisone and other corticosteroids which stop the inflammation but thin the skin. Because allergies are so diverse, first try BioHeal on a small skin area. If there are no adverse side effects, then apply a light coating once or twice daily until the allergy is resolved. Link to Allergic Rashes & Insect.
Psoriasis produces an inflamed, itchy, thickened and cracked skin. BioHeal often helps stop the itching and flaking and thins the skin lesions although it is not a cure for psoriasis. BioHeal is much safer than conventional therapies for psoriasis. The commonly used ultraviolet light combined with free radical generators greatly raises your chances of skin cancer. Researchers at the Harvard Medical School have reported that the drug used with UV treatments, Psoralen, which is an ultraviolet light-activated free radical generator, is also an extremely efficient carcinogen. They found that the rate of squamous cell carcinoma among patients with psoriasis, who had been repeatedly treated with UVA light after a topical application of psoralen, was 83 times higher than among the general population (Stern, Robert S. and Laid, Nan. "The carcinogenic risk of treatments for severe psoriasis". Cancer, Vol. 73, No. 11, June 1, 1994, pp. 2759-64). Link to BioHeal for Psoriasis.
Immune deficiency diseases caused by HIV or the use of chemotherapeutic drugs for cancer treatment cause prolonged skin healing. Many AIDs patients and cancer patients have praised the results obtained with BioHeal. Link to BioHeal for AIDS-HIV Skin Conditions.
Wheelchairs and Bed Confinement increase skin damage. Being in one position can chaff and irritate the skin and impair blood flow to certain skin areas. These conditions can produce skin damage and skin ulcers. Link to BioHeal for Wheelchairs & Bed Confinement.

Advantages of BioHeal
Natural
Multiple Stimulators - BioHeal is an extension
and improvement of earlier Iamin-based work on tissue regeneration which
has produced numerous products that are marketed worldwide to improve the health
of skin and hair. (See Copper-Peptide
Regeneration) but
uses a more biological method to renew the skin. Research on skin renewal
and repair indicates that optimal regeneration is obtained only when there
are multiple signals for renewal. BioHeal contains copper ion plus a mixture
of special protein fragments that are generated by natural proteolytic
enzymes (as occurs after skin damage). This produces numerous Copper-Peptide
complexes in a more natural manner to assist and optimize the skin's natural
regenerative processes.
During the skin repair process, dermal collagen and elastin (which degrades during aging) are rebuilt resulting in a tighter, firmer, more elastic skin. The density of the collagen in the skin increases, providing resistance to skin damage and to irritants penetrating into the skin. The water-holding proteins in the skin (the proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans) are increased, resulting in moist, naturally hydrated skin. The blood micro circulation is rebuilt, giving the skin a better supply of nutrients and improving skin color. Oxidative damage to the skin is reduced as the nutritional copper ion in Protect & Restore activates the skin's naturally occurring anti-oxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase, which combats free-radical damage.
Rebuilds Protective Acid Mantle - BioHeal rebuilds the protective acid mantle of the skin that soaps and cleansers strip away. The acid mantle is the combination of sebum (oils) and perspiration, on the skin's surface that protects the skin and renders the skin less vulnerable to damage and attack by environmental factors such as sun and wind and less prone to dehydration. The mantle also has strong anti-oxidant properties and is self-oxidized to protect the skin from oxidation from the outside. Sebum is naturally white but air oxidation turns it black (this is why "whitehead comedos" turn into "blackhead comedos").
Normal skin is somewhat acid and in the range of 4.2. to 5.6. It varies from one part of the body to another and, in general, the pH of a man's skin is lower (more acid) than that of a woman's. The acid mantle inhibits the growth of foreign bacteria and fungi and the skin remains healthier, and has fewer blemishes. Acne, allergies and other skin problems become more severe when the skin become more alkaline.
BioHeal adjusts the skin pH into the acid range of optimal skin health at about pH 5.0. BioHeal contains high levels of lipids such as squalane, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate and stearic acid that closely resemble the fats of the acid mantle. Furthermore, it contains antioxidants such as allantoin, aloe, Vitamin E and retinol to aid the mantle's protective anti-oxidant properties. Squalane is the skin's most important protective lipid and declines from levels of 11% in teenager's skin to less than 5% in adults after age 20.
Within the past year, a number of our customers have told us of good responses in alleviating or reducing eczema or psoriasis after the combined use of Emu Oil and BioHeal. The fatty acid composition of human skin oil and Emu Oil are very similar. In both oils, mono-unsaturated oleic acid is the most prevalent, then palmitic acid, followed by the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid. This may be the reason for the positive actions of Emu Oil on human skin. (Zemtsov et al 1996)
A study by Lopez and colleagues (1999) found strong anti-inflammatory effects of topically applied Emu Oil after skin was exposed to the a very strong irritant: Croton Oil. By 12 hours after applying Emu Oil, there was significantly less edema and swelling than controls not treated with the oil.
Politis and Dmytrowich (1998) found that if Emu Oil was applied immediately after a wounding injury, it delayed healing. However, if applied 2 days after injury, it then aided the healing process. So for skin repair, first use Copper-Peptides, then start using the Emu Oil.
While scientific studies on Emu Oil are just beginning, Emu Oil has been traditionally used to help alleviate discomfort of arthritis, shingles, eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory conditions.

Clinical Studies on BioHeal and Background Information
Skin Biology's skin creams
are clinically-proven to improve skin health after irritation and damage.
Four independent, placebo-controlled double-blinded clinical studies at
the University of California at San Francisco have given statistically
significant positive results as our products markedly accelerated the rate
of skin recovery and repair after severe skin damage. Dr. Howard Maibach,
who directed the studies, is the world's leading authority on damaged and
irritated skin with over 60 books and 1,350 papers on the topic.
Difference Between BioHeal and Protect & Restore
BioHeal and Protect & Restore give similar healing results except BioHeal is slightly more sticky to adhere better to damaged skin and also contains the non-drug pain reducers camphor and menthol.
Skin Biology's skin creams are clinically-proven to stimulate skin regeneration after diverse types of irritation and damage. Four independent, placebo-controlled double-blinded clinical studies at the University of California at San Francisco have given statistically significant positive results as our products markedly accelerated the rate of skin recovery and reduced irritation after severe skin damage. Dr. Howard Maibach, who directed the studies, is the world's leading authority on damaged and irritated skin with over 60 books and 1,350 papers on the topic.
Four Different Types of Skin Damage Studied:
1. Acetone Damaged Skin: Fats have been removed from the skin and produces damage similar to a very dry and cracking skin.
2. Detergent Damaged Skin: Many fats removed plus extensive damage to the outer layer of skin barrier proteins. Basically like putting your hands into soapy water for 24 hours. This is the standard test for Contact Dermatitis.
3. Nickel Allergy Damaged Skin: Produced by the immune system and is similar to the skin damage caused by other allergic responses such as poison ivy, poison oak and other allergens.
4. Tape Stripped Skin: Similar to damaging scraps, abrasions, and small cuts on the skin's surface. A strip of tape is put on the skin, then quickly ripped off. This process is repeated about 50 times in the same place, ultimately producing a small wound in the skin.
UCSF Study: Acetone Damaged Skin
Publication by Zhai, Leow, and Maibach, "Human barrier recovery after acute acetone perturbation: An Irritant Dermatitis Model", Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, Volume 23, pages 11-13, 1998. The skin repairing actions of Protect & Restore on skin damaged by the application of a fat solvent, acetone, was tested. Acetone remove the fats from skin and produces damage similar to a very dry skin. The skin recovery is what would be expected by the use of the cream by a person with exceptionally dry and poorly moisturized skin.
The affected skin was
treated daily with either a Skin Biology repair cream or a placebo cream
(our basic cream without Skin Biology's patented Copper-Peptides) for 5
days and skin repair was then monitored by computerized measurement of
trans-epidermal water loss. This placebo-controlled double-blinded study
gave statistically significant positive results as the Protect & Restore
accelerated the rate of skin repair. This acceleration of skin healing
in normal healthy individuals is difficult to achieve.

Publication by Zhai, Leow, and Maibach, "Sodium lauryl sulfate damaged skin in vivo in man: A Water Barrier Repair Model", Skin Research and Technology, Volume 4, pages 24-27, 1998. The skin repairing actions of Protect & Restore on skin damaged by the application of an irritating detergent was tested. The detergent loosens the skin and breaks down the skin's natural barrier function. The skin recovery is what would be expected by the use of the cream by a person with a skin that had been exposed to skin-damaging irritants.

UCSF Study: Nickel Allergy Damaged Skin
The number one skin allergy is sensitivity to nickel. Approximately 25% of persons have the allergy. The allergy comes from earrings and jewelry, belt buckles, industrial contact, and use of metal tools. Skin recovery is what would be expected by the use of the cream on a person with a skin that had been exposed to allergy-causing irritants such as nickel, poison ivy or poison oak or that had been exposed to skin-damaging irritants. The results suggest that the cream could be used in the place of skin-damaging cortisone.
The Skin Biology repair
cream both accelerated the recovery of skin after injury and had an anti-inflammatory
action on the skin of nickel-allergic persons who were exposed to
nickel salts. Publication by Zhai, Chang, Singh, and Maibach, "In vivo
nickel contact dermatitis: Human Model for Topical Therapeutics", Contact
Dermatitis Vol. 40, pp. 205-208, 1999. Both skin water loss and skin erythema
(redness) were markedly reduced.

Small wounds were created in skin by repeated tape-stripping that creates minor skin wounds. Skin recovery was measured by the normalization of transepidermal water loss. The results compared untreated skin, a placebo cream (our basic cream without Skin Biology's patented copper-peptides) and Protect & Restore.
The results suggest that the cream would be useful for the treatment of
minor skin injuries and skin wounds.

Re: Pilot Study of BioHeal
BioHeal cream was tested on four patients with chronic eczema and two patients with psoriasis. BioHeal was compared to a urea-based cream that was applied to lateral lesions on the same patient.
In the eczema patients, the cream was very effective in reducing the thickness and itching of the lesions. In the psoriasis patients, the thickness of the lesions was thinned significantly, itching was reduced, and the quality of the skin improved although pigmentation was unchanged.
There was no evidence of adverse actions of the creams on the skin and all blood and urine tests were normal.
Why BioHeal Is Better than Cortisone on Irritated and Damaged Skin
BioHeal's Copper-Peptides reduce the need for the use of corticosteroids for skin dermatitis. Corticosteroids (such as cortisone) produce damaged and thinned skin (often 50% thinner) by inhibiting the natural skin repair processes. Use of corticosteroids produces a vicious cycle requiring more corticosteroid use due to more irritations from the weakened skin. The use can promote diabetic conditions, thymus involution, immune suppression, the spread of cancers, bone damage, and cataracts. It is estimated that 5,000 hip replacements yearly in Canada are due to overuse of corticosteroids.
During inflammation, the skin is damaged by immune cells that release toxic oxygen radicals into the damaged area. The purpose of these oxygen radicals is to kill invading bacteria after the initial wound but often the oxygen radicals are released in the absence of any bacteria. Cortisone and corticosteroids act by killing the immune cells to stop oxygen radical release but this also kills the immune cells that release the skin repair growth factors and hence stops skin repair which ultimately leads to a thinned and damaged skin.
Copper-Peptides, on the
other hand, directly detoxify the oxygen radicals. They also transfer copper
to superoxide dismutase (SOD), the skin's primary anti-oxidant protein,
which activates the skin's SOD which further increases the removal of oxygen
radicals. Also, the copper-complexes have been shown to strongly stimulate
the skin's repair systems and improve healing and skin renewal. The above
mentioned nickel allergy study demonstrated both the anti-inflammatory
and skin repair properties of Copper-Peptides. (Zhai, Chang, Singh, and
Maibach, "In vivo nickel contact dermatitis: Human Model for Topical Therapeutics",
Contact Dermatitis Vol. 40, pp. 205-208, 1999.)

When the cream was applied to cultures of pathogenic microorganisms found in infected wounds, it was found to strongly inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacterial common to wounds: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Many
Moisturizers and Emollients Sold by Skin Care Companies Damage Skin
From the Hawaii Dermatology
Seminar, 1997.
Many moisturizers and emollients sold by skin care companies delay the healing of irritated and damaged skin and make the situation worse by inhibiting natural skin repair. According to Dr. Halker-Sorenson (Skandborg, Denmark), new computerized instruments have demonstrated that many popular moisturizers increase skin damage in methods similar to skin irritants.
Nor are skin barrier creams the answer, such as those containing petrolatum and lanolin. Dr. Charles Ellis (Ann Arbor, Michigan) commented, "In my experience and from what I can garner (from the literature), I don't think they work very well. What we need is to protect the skin surface and to heal the skin from within, by putting the skin in a situation in which normal skin repair can occur." (From: Skin and Allergy News, April 1997)
Virtually all popular moisturizers and emollients sold by skin care companies contain high concentrations of detergents and detergent-like chemicals - despite 40 years of scientific evidence that these detergents damage the skin and degrade the skin's natural protective function. Also damaging to skin are many of the dyes and optical diffusers used to give the appearance of healthy skin. Another mistake is to add to skin creams certain lipids that occur naturally in the skin - hoping that this will replenish skin lipids and improve skin health. However, recent research has found that adding natural skin fats and lipids to skin creams cause a reduction in the skin's natural biosynthesis of skin fats and lipids so that, in a few weeks, the skin is in worse condition than before.
Protect & Restore® and Bioheal are among the very few skin products that have been scientifically proven to be effective by rigorous clinical studies by independent investigators (double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical studies) to help the processes of natural skin repair and improve skin health. Further, the results of these studies have been published in reputable dermatology journals.
Even natural plant products can damage skin. Many skin care companies advertise the value of various combinations of exotic plant extracts in their products. This is no assurance of safety or effectiveness. Many plants avoid being eaten by insects, birds, and mammals because they are filled with poisons and carcinogens which can irritate and damage skin. When evaluating skin products, one should always ask the salesperson where to find independent clinical studies that support the product claims.
General Results with BioHeal
My father had been under continuous dermatology care including daily Rx, cryosurgery and microplasty procedures for 25 years. I introduced him to P&R #3 and cleansing bar which he began using in place of the various topical Rx's the doctor kept prescribing. Within 3 days his skin was noticeably improved. Within 1 week it was better than at any time during the 25 years of medical care. After about 1 month, Dad switched to Bioheal with more improvement immediately.
Bottom line: no dermatology prescriptions or procedures since this 81 year old customer began using Dr. Pickart's products. What a blessing! Everyone including the doctors are amazed. Bioheal has done what years of medicines could not.
Thank you so much.

"The Turn Back the Clock Doc", Loren Pickart has spent his life working on methods to reverse the effects of aging in the human body. He is the discoverer of the role of remodeling copper peptides on the repair of human skin and other tissues such bone, hair follicles, liver, stomach lining, and the intestinal tract after his isolation of the human skin remodeling copper-peptide, GHK-Copper from human blood. Skin remodeling copper peptides are the body's natural signals that repair and restore damaged and aged tissue by (1) inducing strong anti-inflammatory actions (activate superoxide dismutase and decrease damaging actions of TGF-beta and interleukin-1), by (2) stimulating the removal of damaged and older skin by increasing the synthesis of metalloproteinases, and (3) by increasing the generation of new collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, and rebuilding the microcirculation and by increasing production of new skin cells. He and his wife, Charlene, worked to start ProCyte Corporation in 1985 to develop his first generation of GHK-Copper products and Skin Biology in 1994 to create a second generation of more effective, skin remodeling copper peptides.
Products based on Pickart's inventions and GHK-Copper have been marketed by AdviCare, American Crew, Amuchina (Europe), Atelier Esthetique, Bard Medical, BioPharm (Middle East), Creative Nail Design, Johnson & Johnson, Schering AG, Neutrogena, Osmotics, ProCyte, Sigmacon Medical Products (Canada) and Tanox Biosystems (Asia). In addition, human clinical studies of Pickart's inventions for bone healing and healing of intestinal irritations (Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Crohn's disease) have given positive results. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at San Francisco. For details on copper-peptide tissue remodeling - see: Copper-Peptide Regeneration.
Skin Biology is currently patenting and test marketing various products built around his new copper-peptides that are designed to possess greatly enhanced potency, strong breakdown resistance (and can be used with skin exfoliating hydroxy acids for more rapid skin renewal and for scar reduction), a longer duration of action, and very high adherence to skin. The first generation products designed around GHK-Copper performed well in many controlled tests; however, they failed in FDA clinical trials on the healing of difficult-to-heal human wounds.
